The Story Behind: Nemean Lion

I am currently using Greek mythology as inspiration for a new series of work I'm producing. I find it fascinating how different species (especially the imaginary) are portrayed in storytelling.

In the story of the Nemean Lion, he is a ferocious beast that cannot be stopped. Killing townsfolk and capturing ladies to carry them to his lair for supper. It was said that when warriors came looking for these fair maidens, the Lion would transform into the wounded women, thus tricking the warriors and devouring them for his breakfast.

It was the first of Heracles twelve labours, to kill the Nemean Lion and he did succeed. Many believe that his iconic Lion skin could be that of the Nemean Lion’s.

Living in Singapore - which actually means Singa (Lion) Pura (city/fortress) I have found using the imagery of the Lion really exciting. My new work titled Nemean Lion recycles the central image in my piece Screwed up Foot.  In that picture a Lion is seen gnawing down on my foot which represents being in Singapore and the chaos of my broken ankle here in Jan 2013.

Nemean Lion, May 2013

Lion populations are in severe decline across Africa and are regarded as ‘vulnerable’ by IUCN. Due to loss of habitat, conflicts with humans & unsustainable trophy hunting.  So I think it’s about time we realise how inspirational these creatures are and began looking after them properly. I certainly will be using our furry friend again for future studies, they are a species to be celebrated before a Lion itself becomes a myth.
